A guide to Visa Application before a safari

A guide to Visa Application before a safari

You have booked your flights. You have imagined the wide open African savannah, the lions resting in the grass, and the thrill of seeing wildlife in its natural home. You may even have bought a safari hat and a good pair of binoculars. Then suddenly a question appears that almost every traveler asks before visiting East Africa. Do I need a visa? Do I apply online? What exactly is an eTA?

Entry requirements for East African countries can feel confusing at first, especially because some rules have changed recently. Kenya in particular introduced a new system that replaced the traditional visa process. Many travelers hear the phrase visa free and assume no paperwork is needed, but that is not entirely true.

At Clayton Safaris we help travelers from all over the world plan their safaris across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda. One of the most common questions we receive is about travel documents and entry rules. This guide explains everything in clear and simple language so you can prepare your documents with confidence and focus on enjoying your adventure.

Kenya’s New Entry System: The Electronic Travel Authorisation

In January 2024 Kenya introduced a new entry system called the Electronic Travel Authorisation, commonly known as the eTA. The government removed traditional visas and replaced them with this online approval process.

Although Kenya is now described as visa free, every visitor must still complete the eTA application before traveling. This requirement applies to almost all international visitors including children and infants.

The process is simple and completed online. Once approved, you receive a confirmation with a QR code that airlines and immigration officers will check when you arrive.

Important Information About the Kenya eTA

  • Cost: Around 30 US dollars per traveler.
  • Validity: It allows a single entry into Kenya and must be used within ninety days of approval.
  • Processing Time: Most applications are processed within about three working days, but applying one week before travel is always safer.
  • Official Website: Apply only through the official government portal www.etakenya.go.ke.
Airlines will not allow passengers to board flights to Kenya without an approved eTA confirmation. Always apply before leaving home and keep a copy on your phone or printed.

The East Africa Tourist Visa

If you are planning to visit more than one country in the region, there is a very useful option called the East Africa Tourist Visa. This visa allows travelers to move between three countries with one document.

For one hundred US dollars you can visit Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda for up to ninety days. This is ideal for travelers who want to combine wildlife safaris with experiences such as gorilla trekking in Uganda or exploring the mountains and lakes of Rwanda.

There is one important rule to remember. You must apply for the visa through the country where your journey begins.

For example, if your international flight arrives in Nairobi first, you should apply through the Kenyan immigration portal. If your trip starts in Entebbe in Uganda, then you apply through the Ugandan system.

It is also important to know that Tanzania is not part of this visa agreement. Travelers visiting Tanzania must obtain a separate visa for that country.

Visa Requirements for Tanzania

Tanzania follows a more traditional visa system compared with Kenya. Visitors can apply for an electronic visa online before traveling or in some cases obtain a visa upon arrival.

The cost depends on nationality. Travelers from the United States usually pay around one hundred US dollars for a multiple entry visa, while many other nationalities pay around fifty dollars for a single entry visa.

Processing time can take up to ten days, so applying early is recommended. Once approved, your visa allows you to enter mainland Tanzania as well as the island of Zanzibar.

When flying to Zanzibar you will still pass through immigration control even if you already entered mainland Tanzania earlier in your trip.

Documents You Should Prepare Before Applying

Before starting any online visa or travel authorisation application, it helps to prepare a small folder on your computer with the required documents. This will save time because many application systems automatically log out if you stay inactive for too long.

Your Travel Document Checklist

  • Passport Scan: A clear image of the page that shows your photo and personal details. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after your arrival.
  • Passport Style Photo: A simple photo with a plain background. A photo taken against a white wall often works well.
  • Flight Confirmation: A document showing your arrival and departure flights.
  • Accommodation Details: A booking confirmation from your first hotel or a safari itinerary provided by Clayton Safaris.
  • Yellow Fever Certificate: Required when traveling between certain East African countries or when arriving from regions where yellow fever exists.

Common Mistakes Travelers Should Avoid

Small mistakes on visa applications can cause unnecessary stress during travel. The most common problem is entering incorrect passport numbers or spelling names differently from what appears on the passport.

If your passport includes a middle name, make sure you include it exactly as written. Immigration systems compare application details directly with passport records.

Another common mistake is applying too early. For example, Kenya’s eTA is valid only for travel within ninety days of approval. Submitting an application several months in advance may require applying again later.
